8 x 10" woodblock engraved view of the North and South Farallon Islands derived from a Carlton Watkins photograph of the same period, but unable to be replicated in mass publication as a photo yet due to technological limitations which remained until the 1890's. Woodblock was the way to reproduce what was otherwise a singular and unique image as a photograph. Exploited for eggs from seabirds and sealion fur , The Farallon Islands would be among the first offshore California Islands to be granted protections from visitors which remain in place today.
